Violence Against Women Is Rising: “ Why Aren't Strategies Working?

A new report from the National Audit Office (NAO) reveals that violence against women and girls (VAWG) is increasing in the UK, despite years of government strategies. Shockingly, one in 12 women experiences gender-based violence annually, and one in four will face sexual or attempted assault in their lifetime.
The report criticises the Home Office for failing to lead an effective cross-government response. A key ministerial group, meant to oversee action, met only four times in three year's raising concerns about the government's commitment to tackling the issue.
Caroline Harper, who led the NAO report, highlighted the lack of focus on prevention, stressing that while supporting victims is crucial, preventing violence in the first place should be the priority. Meanwhile, Isabelle Younane of Women's Aid noted that while the government has promised action, real change is yet to be seen.
With VAWG on the rise, it's clear that existing strategies aren't working. The government must shift its focus towards prevention, accountability, and measurable action to protect women and girls from harm.
